CHAPTER ELEVEN

During the flight, Jenny read the majority of the book. She thought about the characters involved in the story and wondered if they could ever be considered true to life. The whole book had been sickly sweet and totally unrealistic in her eyes. No one in the world could be as crazy in love as the couple played out in the pages, could they? Or was that her own bitterness rearing its ugly head?

Has my life been soured that much that I should regard all marriages a sham? She wondered if all men treated their wives adoringly in public then beat the hell out of them once the front door closed. She’d heard a startling statistic on the news recently that one in three women worldwide had suffered some form of abuse at the hands of her partner. That figure both saddened and scared the living crap out of her.

Maybe Brian Gray was right, after all, when he wrote the famous book about the different sexes coming from alternate planets. She’d had a lot of time during her loveless marriage to think over the debate, and she often wondered what men would actually do without women. She sniggered at the thought of every household around the world getting snowed under by piles of washing, let alone the ironing. How many men even knew where to turn on a washing machine? Then she pondered a more serious note: what would come of the world if all the women were wiped off the face of the earth? Where would mankind be then? Who would give birth to the future generations?

The flight attendant’s voice filled the cockpit, announcing their imminent arrival, and yet another bout of nervousness sparked into life. This time, she wondered what Helen’s and Brian’s reactions would be once they finally met. Helen always sounded so sweet in her letters, and she’d been lovely on the phone.

She glanced back up the aisle to see if Sandy was looking her way, and she was. Sandy mouthed, “Keep calm. You’re doing great. We’re almost there now.”

Nodding, Jenny checked her seatbelt as the plane began its gradual descent. Before long, the plane bounced on the tarmac a few times then slowed to a standstill outside the huge terminal.

Jenny grinned, relieved and delighted she’d made it in one piece. She had arrived, touched down on American soil, ready for the next chapter of her life. Not for the first time, she prayed this particular chapter turned out to be far happier than the rest of the sorrowful novel she’d been entangled in.

Another hour passed before she picked up her bag from the carousel and stepped through to the arrival lounge. Straight away, she spotted Helen holding up a piece of paper with her name written on it. The pair of them embraced as if it they were reuniting after not having seen each other in ages.

“It’s so wonderful to meet you at last, Jenny. You look so well. I hope you had a good flight.
